These three terms are often used as if they mean the same thing. They do not, and choosing the wrong one leaves gaps in billing, stock or accounts.
What each one means
- EMR (electronic medical record): the digital patient record: history, visits, prescriptions and results.
- HMIS (hospital management information system): the operational system that runs the facility: registration, OPD and IPD, ward and bed, lab, pharmacy and billing, with the EMR inside it.
- Hospital ERP: an HMIS plus the back office: accounting, inventory, purchasing and HR/payroll in one platform.
In Nepal, "HMIS" can also mean the government's national health reporting system. This article is about the software a facility buys to run itself.
Which one do you need
- A doctor clinic: often an EMR with appointments and billing is enough to start.
- A polyclinic: an HMIS covering OPD, lab and pharmacy.
- A hospital: an HMIS with IPD, ward and bed, OT, and a connected accounts and stock system, which is a hospital ERP.
Why the ERP layer matters
Without it, the hospital re-keys patient bills into accounting, reconciles pharmacy stock by hand and runs payroll in a separate tool. A hospital ERP removes that double entry and gives one view of revenue, stock and staff cost.
Questions to ask a vendor
- Are OPD, IPD, lab and pharmacy on one patient record?
- Does billing meet IRD and CBMS requirements?
- How are NHIB and SSF claims handled?
- Can accounting, inventory and HR run on the same platform?
Where NitiERP fits
