Many hotels in Nepal still update each online travel agency (OTA) by hand: a room is sold at the front desk, and someone has to remember to close it on Booking.com and Agoda. When that fails, you get overbooking and unhappy guests.
What a channel manager does
A channel manager connects your property management system (PMS) to your OTAs. When a room is booked on one channel, availability updates everywhere else. Rates and restrictions you set once are pushed to every channel.
Two-way vs one-way sync
- Two-way: bookings flow into your PMS and availability and rates flow out to the OTAs. This is what prevents overbooking.
- One-way: you push rates out, but bookings still need to be entered by hand.
What to check before choosing
- Is the connection live with the OTAs you actually use, not just planned?
- Are rates, availability and restrictions all synced, or only availability?
- Do bookings create guest folios in the PMS automatically?
- What happens to a booking if the internet drops at the front desk?
- Is VAT and IRD billing handled on the final invoice?
Avoiding overbooking in practice
- Keep one source of truth for room inventory, your PMS.
- Block rooms for maintenance in the PMS, not on each OTA.
- Review the arrivals list each morning against OTA extranets for the first weeks.
- Set a small buffer on peak dates until you trust the sync.
